SunStuff Sun Protective Clothing in a Nutshell

An increasing connection between sunlight exposure and health risks has led consumers to search for sun protective clothing that protects them from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The sun is responsible for up to 90% of all skin changes previously associated with "aging" -- wrinkles, age spots, and sagging. In addition, skin cancer is now more prevalent than all other types of cancer combined, and it is reported that almost half of all Americans who reach age 65 will develop skin cancer. SunStuff sun protective clothing addresses the growing need for sun protection.

SunStuff UPF50+ sun protective clothing is a cutting-edge, high-performance solution to the increasing demand for serious superior sun protection. SunStuff sun hats are 1) designed to provide maximum coverage of the face, 2) made from UPF50+ fabrics, and 3) attractive, trend-setting, and versatile. Our sun hats help block the ultraviolet rays that cause brown spots, wrinkling and sagging of the skin, and suppress the immune system. SunStuff sun protective clothing helps keep you healthy and active.

Sun Hats: Ours vs. Theirs

SunStuff sun protective clothing and sun hats help preserve youthful skin by diminishing UV damage, and they help protect against skin cancer. Unlike typical hats, SunStuff sun protective hats keep skin covered and protected. While most hats provide adequate shading, they fail to prevent most UV radiation from penetrating to your skin. Regular hats stop as little as 50% of UVB rays -- the burning rays -- and virtually no UVA rays, which accelerate aging of the skin. Because UVA rays penetrate glass, plastic, and many other surfaces, typical fabric and straw hats do not provide sufficient shielding. SunStuff sun hats are lined in the crown and under the brim with Solar Protective FactoryTM (SPF) fabric. These sun protective fabrics -- rigorous enough to pass NASA's standards for sun protection -- block virtually all UVA and UVB rays.

In SunStuff's "straw" sun hats, a unique blend of polypropylene and other fibers create the look of finely woven straw -- without the potential scratchiness and related irritation. Unlike typical straw hats, composed of stiff, brittle fibers, the fibers in our hats are soft and pliable, so they won't rip, tear, or splinter. Our sun protection accessories are breathable, durable, and crushable, so they feel as good as they look.

Each straw-look sun hat is lined in the crown and under the brim with sheer UPF50+ sun protective fabric. The sun hats won't rip, tear, or splinter like traditional straw hats. Just jam them in a bag or suitcase and go!

Is Sunscreen Enough?

Sunscreens are an essential part of sun protection, but they are not effective alone. They rub and sweat off, usually are not applied uniformly, and are not permanent. You must wait at least 20 minutes before chemical sunscreens become effective (bind to the skin cells), and when they are activated, the sun protection lasts only from 20 to 80 minutes. SunStuff sun protective clothing and UPF50+ sun hats provide consistent and "permanent" sun protection while you are outdoors.

Fabric: Ours vs. Theirs

SPF fabric SPF sun protective fabric is different from other sun protective fabrics on the market. It is the only sun protective fabric to pass all current ultraviolet penetration tests. SPF applies a patented chemical UV protector, which both absorbs and reflects sunlight, during the dying process so that the chemical is bonded to the fabric fiber at the molecular level. Unlike other sun protective fabrics, which are coated with chemicals after the weaving process, SPF's sun protection does not wash or wear off. SunStuff sun protective clothing and UPF50+ sun hats retain their effectiveness when wet. In fact, after 40+ consecutive washings, SPF fabric continued to block more than 95% of UV light.

In addition to the durability testing, bio-compatibility tests determined our sun protective fabrics to be 100% non-irritating to even the most sensitive skin -- something most chemically sprayed on sun protective fabrics cannot claim.

  • "Women spend billions of dollars each year in an effort to reduce the wrinkling and spotting caused by sun damage. These changes to the skin are not inevitable. Sun protective clothing, like SunStuff UPF50+ products, used in conjunction with sunblock, helps prevent many signs of aging before they occur, so the skin is able to dedicate itself to the process of renewal rather than defense." -- Laurie Polis, MD, SOHO Integrative Wellness Center

  • "Anything you can do to avoid sunlight will give you an edge in preventing premature aging of the skin. Specially designed sun protective clothing, like SunStuff's trendy UPF50+ hats, offer products with downward-sloping, extended brims that maximize coverage of the face and neck in order to minimize exposure to direct sunlight. Anything that helps to shield you from the sun will help you better preserve the texture and clarity of your skin." - Tina Alster, MD
